The Backstory

Before the Air Jordan 4 came along, Nike was under real pressure to deliver. It was a notable step forward in Hatfield's design thinking, blending personalization with durability.

Materials were another major focus. Hatfield introduced Durabuck, a lightweight, durable synthetic leather that was also more environmentally friendly than the traditional leathers used at the time. The mesh paneling across the upper was treated using a process of dipping it in soft plastic and blasting it with air, giving the shoe better breathability and a lighter overall feel for game action. Not long after its release, the Air Jordan 4 became tied to one of the most memorable moments in Michael Jordan's career. On May 7, 1989, during a first-round playoff game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Jordan hit a game-winning shot over defender Craig Ehlo in the final seconds, sealing a 101-100 win for the Chicago Bulls. The moment became known simply as "The Shot," and the image of Jordan celebrating mid-air in his Air Jordan 4s turned into one of the most iconic photographs in NBA history.

That same year, the Air Jordan 4 also made an appearance in Spike Lee's film "Do the Right Thing," in a scene where Giancarlo Esposito's character Buggin' Out gets into a confrontation after his brand-new pair gets scuffed. Spike Lee himself became closely tied to the shoe's marketing through his character Mars Blackmon, who first appeared in his 1986 film "She's Gotta Have It" and later resurfaced in ad campaigns for the sneaker. The Original Colorways

The Air Jordan 4 officially released worldwide in late 1989 in four original colorways: White Cement, Black Cement (often referred to as "Bred"), Fire Red, and Military Blue. Retail price at launch was $110, ten dollars more than its predecessor, making it one of the pricier Air Jordan releases at the time.

Each of the four original colorways carried its own identity. Black Cement, with its mottled concrete-print outsole, is widely regarded as the most iconic of the bunch, tied directly to the imagery of "The Shot." White Cement carried a similar spirit on a lighter base, while Fire Red and Military Blue leaned into simpler execution, each built around a single accent color over a white foundation.

The Retro Era And Its Legacy

The Air Jordan 4 saw its first retro release in 1999, marking its return after a decade off shelves. A second retro run followed, bringing back both Black Cement and White Cement while also introducing the Retro+ concept, which opened the door for non-original colorways to appear on the Air Jordan 4 silhouette. From there, the shoe was continually refreshed across the following decades, from collaborations with artists and fashion labels to colorways drawing on pop culture.
