Air Jordan 9 Low "What The Kilroy" Revives the Johnny Kilroy Storyline

Air Jordan 9 Low "What The Kilroy" Revives the Johnny Kilroy Storyline

ALEX NGUYENAugust 09, 2026

The Air Jordan 9 has always occupied one of the more unusual, story-driven chapters in Michael Jordan's signature line. Released during his first retirement from basketball, the model was tied to the famous "Johnny Kilroy" campaign, a fictional storyline built around the idea of MJ quietly returning to the court under a different identity. It remains one of Nike's most inventive advertising efforts, and Jordan Brand is now revisiting that world through a low-top take on the silhouette.

Rather than bringing back each pair from the 2012 "Kilroy Pack" on its own, Jordan Brand is taking a more condensed approach this time. The new low-top pulls elements from every alias that defined the original lineup, including Johnny Kilroy, Fontay Montana, Bentley Ellis, Calvin Bailey, Slim Jenkins, and Motorboat Jones, coming together in a single "What The" arrangement. One shoe leans into black, navy, yellow, and white, while the other brings in red, black, grey, blue, and yellow, resulting in a mismatched build that feels deliberate rather than random.

The details are what really tie the concept together. "Kilroy Kicks Butt" is embroidered on the inner collar, a direct nod to the original fictional player campaign. The tongues carry stacked alias references in classic Air Jordan 9 fashion, while the heels feature alternating "23" and "4" embroidery, linking Michael Jordan's real identity with his invented alter ego. Metallic hardware on the lace loops adds another layer of texture, and the mix of materials and colorways keeps the pair busy by design rather than by accident.

For longtime collectors, this release could be a divisive one, since many would have preferred clean individual retros of the original six-pair set instead of a single mashup. The Air Jordan 9 Low "What The Kilroy" officially drops August 14 at $180.
