Free The Youth x Air Jordan 16: A Ghanaian Story On An Overlooked Silhouette

The Air Jordan 16 has long been one of the least explored silhouettes in Jordan Brand's retro catalog, but 2026 marks a notable comeback for the model through a collaboration with Free The Youth, a Ghanaian creative collective. It's also the first time the group has moved from campaign partner to co-signing an actual release with Jordan Brand.

The design keeps the Air Jordan 16's signature removable shroud intact, but reworks it entirely in both material and narrative. The outer shroud comes in a metallic silver finish, while the interior delivers the boldest moment of the whole design: an oversized wing graphic in orange and blue, letting wearers flip the shroud to change the shoe's look entirely.

Underneath, the base upper runs in a grey-white tone, paired with orange mesh detailing around the heel. The midsole shifts through an orange-to-black gradient, marked with an "FTY" logo, while neon green accents show up scattered around the heel area. A "Free The Youth" logo sits on the lateral side, and a black rubber outsole finishes things off. The entire concept draws from Ghanaian architecture, traditional prints, and Tema, the collective's hometown, all captured through a campaign built with hand-crafted sets rather than digital effects.
